DATA PROVIDERS AND ACCURACY

eWeather HD allows you to use different weather providers for the same city (intellicast.com (US) - "US Weather provider" and foreca.com (EU))

TEMPERATURE ON HOME SCREEN
Available in eWeather HD 2.3 and higher

eWeather HD allows you to place current temperature on your iPhone (iPad) home screen. The indication is added as red badge on top of eWeather HD application icon. All updates are performing using Apple's push notification services.

Server pushes the data each 45 minutes. Please note that some weather stations (some remote place on Foreca channel) may delay the data up to two hours.

Note

In case if the app does not display temp badge, please check the settings in your iPhone/iPad: Settings->Notifications->eWeather HD and set the values as shown on the screenshot:

Technical limitations

Apple's badge system doesn't support negative numbers and zero. That's why we added the option (turned off by default) which allows to display negative values as positive. eWeather will warn you with the pop-up alert (or iOS 5 Notification center message) when the temperature is zero or drops below zero. Please note that the badge will disappear when the temperature is zero. Despite the limitations, all the data inside the app are displayed correctly. You can turn on/off warnings for zero/negative temperature in the app settings.

How to add temperature on the home screen

By the default this feature is turned off. There are two ways to turn it on:

Go to the list of locations. Press the 'i' button in the bottom right corner:

  • • In the list of locations tap the icon at the right of the city;
  • • Go to options->Home screen badge, choose the city from the drop-down list. Here you can turn on/off the warnings for zero/subzero temperatures.

Please note that you may add only on city on your home screen.

Technology features

The main idea of "Apple's push notification services" is a fast and reliable delivery of data which saves your battery. Actually you'll get a live widget which being updated even if the app is not running. Now you don't need to open the app every time to see the temperature.

Troubleshooting

Push notifications require an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

  • 1. After installing an app or restoring a backup to a different iOS device, or upgrading iOS, open the app and turn on/off the badge for the selected location.
  • 2. Check Settings > Notifications to ensure that the app is configured for notifications. Turn on badge and alerts.
  • 3. If you are still unable to receive notifications and you are using a Wi-Fi connection, verify that the network or firewall is not blocking access to port 5223.
  • 4. If all above does not help, turn on and leave Airplane mode on for a full minute.
  • 5. Please note that push notifications may not work on jailbroken devices.

TWO WEATHER PROVIDERS

eWeather HD 2.0 supports two weather agencies (providers): Intellicast.com (USA) and Foreca.com (EU).

There were two reasons for this. The first one - the number of locations. With new european provider the number of locations in EU (and other countries, except the US) has been increased by more than 5 times and now eWeather HD supports more than 130,000 cities.

The second reason is the accuracy. While intellicast.com is extremely accurate in the US, the foreca.com is the most trusted source for the EU. You may switch between providers by pressing the image (provider's logo) in the top left corner. Also you may add the location twice. You'll be asked to choose the provider.

DOPPLER RADAR (US only)

eWeather HD has built-in animated radar (NEXRAD) for locations from the US. Radar images are displayed on the Google Maps so you may use pinch-to-zoom to setup best view and scale.

Factory-defaults settings are optimized to provide faster loading speed. Even on EDGE connection you'll wait only seconds to see the last image and about 30 seconds to load all other frames for a entire the US.On 3G it takes 10 seconds and on WiFi even less.

In order to receive images with higher resolution go to options and override the settings for the desired connection type. Please remember that higher quality requires more time to download.
